There are essentially two forms of power of attorney: a lasting power of attorney (LPA) and a general power of attorney (GPA). The latter cannot be used if the person becomes mentally incapable; instead its purpose is to let someone temporarily manage their general affairs (e.g. sign their cheques to pay the bills).
MyLawyer® legal services are delivered in association with our approved law firms, who are all regulated by the appropriate body for the jurisdiction they practice in: either the Solicitors Regulation Authority (for England and Wales), the Law Society of Scotland, or the Law Society of Northern Ireland. It's an unfortunate fact, but people can become unable to manage their affairs at any stage of life. Whether accident, sickness or mental illness is the cause, managing bank accounts, paying bills and even simple personal care may become impossible without assistance.
