In England and Wales, consumers are protected by the following legislation:

  • Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977
  • Consumer Rights Act 2015 (or Sale of Goods Act 1979 for contracts made before 1 October 2015)
  • Consumer Rights Act 2015 (or Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982 for contracts made before 1 October 2015)
  • Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 (for trade descriptions)

Similar legal protection is provided under Scottish law.

Rights under the Sale of Goods Act and the Supply of Goods and Services Act

All services must be provided:

  • with reasonable care and skill;
  • within a reasonable time; and
  • for a reasonable price, if a price has not already been agreed.

All goods must be:

  • delivered;
  • as described;
  • of satisfactory quality; and
  • fit for their purpose.
