Overview

Teleworking is an arrangement where staff work away from the workplace using information and communications technologies (ICT) to keep in touch with their employer, colleagues or customers. A teleworking employee can:

  • Work full-time from home
  • Divide their time between home and your workplace
  • Be a mobile worker who uses a variety of locations, including their home, your workplace and any place where their telecommunications equipment can work

Employment Appeal Tribunals decisions have ruled that a request to work from home is conceptually similar to a request to work part-time at the employer's workplace. Therefore, you need to give careful consideration to any employee requests for alternative working arrangements, including teleworking.

The concepts of having 'family friendly' policies, 'flexible working' and having a 'work-life balance' frequently require employers to consider the potential for teleworking.
