Documents in this area

  • General power of attorney

Our 'General power of attorney' document enables you to temporarily grant someone else the authority to deal with your financial affairs. This may be useful if, for example, you are out of the country for a period of time and need someone to manage your affairs while you are away. Please note, however, that a 'General power of attorney' is not suitable if you need someone to manage your affairs after you have lost the mental capacity to act on your own behalf – instead, use our 'Lasting power of attorney (LPA) – Health and welfare' or 'Lasting power of attorney (LPA) – Property and financial affairs'.

  • Lasting power of attorney - Health and welfare

This document allows you to nominate up to six people to make decisions about your health and social welfare in the event that you can no longer do so yourself. You can also set restrictions and leave guidance on what decisions they can make. Once completed, this document must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG). However, a separate fee will be payable to the OPG. Once registered, the power comes into effect when you lose the mental capacity to make decisions for yourself (e.g. you are comatose or suffering from dementia).

  • Lasting power of attorney - Property and financial affairs

This document allows you to nominate up to six people and/or a trust corporation to make decisions about your financial affairs in the event that you can no longer do so yourself. You can also set restrictions and leave guidance on what decisions they can make. Once completed, this document must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG). However, a separate fee will be payable to the OPG.

  • Revocation of a general or enduring power of attorney
Use this document to cancel either a General power of attorney (sometimes called an Ordinary power of attorney), or an Enduring power of attorney (EPA).

If you want to revoke an EPA, you can only use this document if the EPA hasn't been registered - otherwise, you'll need to apply to either the Court of Protection (in England & Wales) or the Office of Care and Protection (in Northern Ireland).

Note that you can only use this document for powers of attorney created in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. You can't use it to revoke a Lasting power of attorney.
