Identify theft, credit improvement and coronavirus

In this section you'll find information and updates related to coronavirus that are relevant to the areas of identity theft and credit improvement.

The UK's response to coronavirus is changing regularly and often very quickly. While we'll continue to make every effort to keep this page up to date, there may be short periods where what you read here is not the latest information available. Where possible we've tried to provide links to official sources, so you can check the current situation.

Cyber crime and scams

The pandemic has seen an increase in cybercriminal activity. Information and advice is available from Cifas, who discuss many of the scams that specifically prey on the vulnerability of people during the pandemic. Such scams can be used to steal your identity and/or get money from you.

Some of the scams they discuss are related to, for example:

  • The availability of personal protective equipment
  • Refunds for holiday cancellations
  • The HMRC job retention scheme
  • Calls impersonating the World Health Organisation or HMRC
  • Fake vaccines, etc.

If you think you've been a victim of cyber crime you can report it with the National Fraud and Cyber Crime Reporting Centre.
