What is a health and safety policy?
Your health and safety policy reflects your current approach to managing the health and safety of your employees and others who may be affected by your work.
The statement should outline your overall policy, the responsibilities within your organisation, and the arrangements in place to meet legal health and safety requirements. It must also confirm that you'll bring the statement - and any updates - to the attention of all employees, as required by law.
If you employ 5 or more people in your business, this policy must be in writing. However, even if you employ fewer than 5 people, it is still a good idea to have a written policy.
The health and safety policy must be brought to the attention of all employees and should remain readily accessible. Any revisions to the policy should also be communicated to all employees.
Which laws apply?
- Section 2(3) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
- Article 4(3) of the Health and Safety at Work (Northern Ireland) Order 1978
