What to include in a health and safety policy
Contents
The contents of a health and safety policy will depend on the size and nature of the company.
The policy is usually divided into a few sections, for example:
A statement of intent
This is a short, high-level statement that outlines your business's commitment to health and safety. It should include:
- A clear declaration of your commitment to ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of employees and others who may be affected by your work activities.
- Your general aims and objectives related to health and safety (e.g. reducing risks, complying with legislation, providing training).
- The name and signature of the business's senior representative employee, such as the managing director or owner.
- The date it was signed and the date of the next review.
Organisation of health and safety responsibilities
This section explains who is responsible for what within your organisation and should include:
- The names or job titles of those with specific responsibilities for health and safety (e.g. overall responsibility, day-to-day management, carrying out risk assessments).
- Clear delegation of responsibilities to managers, supervisors, or specific staff members.
- Arrangements for consultation with employees on health and safety issues.
Arrangements for and management of health and safety
This is the most detailed section. It describes how the organisation will manage health and safety in practice. It might include:
- Your procedures for carrying out and reviewing risk assessments.
- Emergency procedures (e.g. fire safety, first aid).
- Safe systems of work for specific tasks or activities.
- Information, instruction, training, and supervision provided to employees.
- Your procedures for reporting and investigating accidents/incidents.
- Arrangements for maintaining equipment and workplaces.
